Make the Family Happy Campers on Vacation This Year

Camping is an activity that can be enjoyed by pretty much everyone, not just the die hard adventurers who spend months in the most remote regions of the world, living on worms and berries and growing Rip Van Winkle-like beards. Many urban areas of all sizes have designated camping sites, for those who don’t want to be too far from civilization. Of course, there are still some ultra-wild spots left in the world for the Rip Van Winkle crowd, too.

In today’s Information Age, there are many resources available to the camper and wannabe camper. The Internet, of course, is loaded with sites that offer camping tips, maps, camping sites and gear. Retailers that specialize in outdoor gear not only provide equipment, clothing and supplies on their websites, but they also feature articles from experts on everything from nutrition to first-aid.

Taking the family camping can be one of the relatively least expensive vacations out there. It’s hard to put a monetary value on a roaring campfire, roasting marshmallows or running free in a mountain meadow or even making memories that will last a lifetime. Excursions can be as simple as buying a four person tent, some sleeping bags and heading out to the nearest public campsite. Some of these charge a fee, but it’s usually less than $10.

Some other essential items to bring along are things most people probably already have in their house, so no additional expense is required. A list of ten basic items, originally put together in the 1930s by a Seattle based group called The Mountaineers, is still relevant to ensure one is a happy camper today:

1. Map

2. Compass

3. Sunglasses and sunscreen

4. Extra clothing

5. Headlamp/flashlight

6. First-aid supplies

7. Fire starter

8. Matches

9. Knife

10. Extra food

Involving the kids in the camping experience is something that will no doubt provide a lifetime of memories. Chances are excellent that if the parent or adult taking the child camping is enthusiastic and excited about camping, the child will be, too. However, some extra planning is necessary to make sure parents and kids alike have an enjoyable time.

If the kids have never gone camping before, you should practice camping by pitching a tent in the backyard this will give them a sense of what it is like to sleep outdoors and what is involved in setting up a camp. It’s a good idea to involve the kids in the planning of the camping trip. This will help them feel like they are an important part of the family outdoor experience.

Once in the wilderness or at the campground, there are many activities to enjoy like, fishing, hiking and if you have knowledge of surrounding plants, trees and wildlife these are always great teachings to pass on to your children. Camping can be a blast for the whole gang, give it a try for your next family outing.

I am attempting to run my own blog however I think its too general and I would like to focus more on smaller topics.
