How to Choose a Tent
Camping tents, backpacking tents, there are a world of options available to outdoor adventurers and choosing the right one may be the single most important decision you can make. As your source of shelter from the elements, a good tent can literally make all the difference. Your choice will be dependent on a variety of conditions and you should make it well in advance of your outdoor adventure plans.
The first condition that will affect your choice of the tent is the type of trip you will be taking. A routine camping trip will involve one set of requirements and backpacking presents and entirely different challenge. A backpacking tent is quite different from a traditional tent in that it will necessarily be much lighter in weight and smaller in size for ease of carrying.
Tents come in different shapes and sizes, from small one person shelters to tents large enough to accommodate four adults or more. Camping tents will generally be larger and sturdier that those for backpacking, but all tents should include mesh panels for ventilation and a rainfly for extra protection from the elements.
Choosing the right tent begins with knowing how many people you will need to accommodate and how large they are. The ideal is to have a tent which allows a comfortable amount of space when lying down and enough ground area so that you can move around easily. A backpacking tent will generally be smaller, accommodating only one or two adults, but there are a few three or four person models as well.
Of course, the biggest consideration when backpacking is the weight of the tent. The ideal for most backpackers is to minimize the amount of weight to carry, which means choosing a tent made of lightweight material. Unlike camping tents, most backpacking tents will use aluminum frames which will also cut down on the weight.
Different climates have different requirements and you’ll also want to be sure you have the best tent for the weather you’ll be facing. Hot weather means you will want a 3 season tent with good ventilation and extra room to breathe. Cold weather you will want a 4 season camping or backpacking tent that will give you extra protection in extreme cold and snowy weather conditions.
You may also want to invest in a “footprint” or also called a “floor saver”, which is a pre-sized heavy duty ground cover that fits the shape of the tent floor. This ground cover goes down before setting up the tent and will give your tent floor an extra layer of protection from water, rocks and roots.
Whether you’re taking a traditional camping trip of backpacking, you’ll want to be sure that you have the best possible tent. Do your homework and check all the options. You want the best for yourself and your family, so don’t compromise. The last place you want to cut corners is with your home away from home!
